Rowing
On the rowing front, we have 2 women’s novice eights and a men’s novice eight and four who are quite an enthusiastic bunch. We need coaching support for these guys and if you are interested in helping out in any way, please let me know. Our men’s senior and intermediate group of about 30+oarsmen have been sculling and there looks like the promise of a very good bunch of athletes this year. We also have a women’s intermediate eight and a smaller senior group. We are working on targets for the men and women that will include national trials and Henley for the women, foreign regattas and Henley for the men; if they can make the grade through the season.
Meanwhile our Junior Men and Women continue to provide a great buzz in the club and we look forward to success with them during 2008-09 and we intend to compete at a number of home regattas with at least one event we will travel to.
Club Redevelopment
Thanks to Mark Kelly, Liam Gleeson, Liz Van Nulck, Dermot Keogh, Paul Byrne and Gerry Cantan who helped Mark make a successful application to the lottery for funding. It now looks like we will receive funding approaching ½ a million euros. We intend to use this funding to provide a larger indoor training area; with more room for ergometers, better changing and showering facilities and a slightly larger clubhouse. We will need your support during the year to bridge the funding for equipment and to pay upfront costs such as planning application and consultancy fees so if you are in the happy position of being able to make a donation or cash contribution to the club, please contact myself, Mick Desmond, Mark Kelly or Dermot Keogh. We will try to have some plans for display on the party night but they will be on display at the club soon.
Equipment
Last year we were lucky enough to receive funding from Texaco which helped us purchase equipment and this year we have received support for new oars. The club has also purchased 2 eights Men/Women from Sims to help keep our athletes boated. We are still under tremendous pressure for sculls and small boats so if you are in a position to help us here please contact me.
Events next year
In 2009, we will run the first ever Commercial Head, a 5k time trial in Blessington. This will be on the 7th March, 2009. Our regatta will be on the 5th April less than a month later. We are looking for people to help us on the day. If you are someone who would like to help the club even for one day, please let us know so that the regular volunteers can attend to the rowers on the day.
All the best for now and I look forward to seeing you at the Club on Saturday week at 8pm. Buy your tickets early.
